The additional bonus is you get autofocus on a bright star, even with the 400/5.6! You'll need a decent mount to handle the weight of the lens though. And I have pretty good results with it. The 400/5.6L is great for astrophotography and is super-sharp....

Simplest is to start by doing star trails. Any camera where you can lock the shutter open for many minutes will work (DSLRs can do this with a cable release). You need a tripod too. Try 10, 30, 60 minutes at something like ISO 200 to 400, f/8....

A large galaxy like Andromeda (M31), around 8 full moons in apparent width, will look great in a 200mm lens. Pleiades (M45), the Carina nebula, and other large objects also work well at 200mm with a full-frame camera, and even better with a crop frame DSLR....
